Fire Incident at Lake Mariner Data Center Raises Safety Concerns

<p>In early June, a fire occurred in an unfinished building at the Lake Mariner data center in Somerset, New York, revealing significant safety issues. Firefighters reportedly encountered no working alarm, no suppression system, and three non-functional hydrants; the safety documents they are legally entitled to access reportedly burned in the fire.</p><p>Steve Matisz, chief of the Barker Fire Department, stated that his crew entered the building “kind of blind,” facing heavy black smoke from unidentified chemicals due to the absence of safety sheets. “It’s been a difficult situation,” Matisz remarked, expressing uncertainty about the claim that the safety sheets had burned in the fire.</p><p>The site, a former coal mine on Lake Ontario, is part of a $3.2 billion campus that is one of the largest AI data center developments in New York, involving multiple stakeholders. TeraWulf owns and operates the data center on land leased from a company owned by its CEO; Fluidstack, a UK-based AI company, will manage the center; Google holds warrants for a future 14 percent equity stake and has agreed to guarantee Fluidstack’s lease payments; and Anthropic is among the AI companies that the facility aims to serve.</p>
