Cuba Reports Economic Losses Due to US Embargo, No Negotiations Planned

Cuba has stated that it is not currently negotiating with the United States amid ongoing economic pressure from the Trump administration. Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez made this announcement during a media conference, where he detailed the significant impact of the US embargo on the Cuban economy. According to the Cuban government, the embargo has resulted in an estimated loss of $8 billion between March 2025 and February 2026, marking the highest figure recorded and a 7% increase from the previous reporting period. This figure does not account for recent sanctions, including restrictions on energy supplies imposed in January and secondary sanctions imposed in May. Rodríguez characterized the embargo as a form of 'economic asphyxiation' and referred to it as 'genocidal.' He highlighted the severe energy crisis in Cuba, where citizens have faced prolonged blackouts, often receiving only two to three hours of electricity per day. He described the adverse effects on daily life, including food spoilage, difficulties for children studying without light, and limited internet access. Rodríguez emphasized that Cuba is not a threat, but the blockade is, labeling the situation as 'collective punishment.' He also noted that tensions between the US and Cuba have escalated under President Trump, despite earlier talks. The issue is expected to be addressed at the United Nations General Assembly, where Cuba will present its annual resolution calling for an end to the US embargo on October 27 and 28. Rodríguez accused the US of exerting pressure on other UN member states regarding the vote but expressed confidence in receiving strong support for the resolution.
