Royal Caribbean Cancels Alaska Cruise Due to Technical Issues

<p>Passengers aboard a cruise ship preparing to set sail for Alaska experienced disruption after the cruise line canceled the trip, citing unspecified technical problems. The seven-night Alaska cruise aboard Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas was scheduled to depart from Vancouver, Canada, on August 30 but was delayed until September 1 for maintenance, according to the blog "Cruise Critic." However, two days after passengers embarked in Vancouver, Royal Caribbean announced the cancellation of the voyage.</p><p>Passengers were allowed to use the ship’s amenities while they arranged for flights home, several cruise blogs reported. The voyage was originally scheduled to stop in Sitka, Juneau, Ketchikan, and Prince Rupert. A Royal Caribbean Group spokesperson stated, "To accommodate ongoing maintenance, we’ve had to cancel our sailing. We apologize to our guests for the inconvenience and have worked with them to adjust their travel plans." The spokesperson added that repairs had been completed and the ship was ready for its next scheduled sailing.</p><p>The issue began on August 22 when Royal Caribbean emailed guests to inform them that the sailing would be reduced to five days to accommodate additional maintenance, as reported by "Cruise Critic." Guests who did not wish to take the shortened trip were offered several options, including a refundable onboard credit and a future cruise credit. Ultimately, the ship did not leave Vancouver because the repairs were not finished.</p><p>All booked passengers will receive a full refund, retain their previously issued onboard credit, receive a future cruise credit for 100% of their cruise fare, and reimbursement for eligible flight-change fees, according to the "Royal Caribbean Blog." Serenade of the Seas, a mid-sized Royal Caribbean vessel, can accommodate 2,143 guests at double occupancy and features amenities such as floor-to-ceiling windows, a rock-climbing wall, and multiple dining venues.</p><p>The ship has faced technical difficulties in recent years. In July 2025, it experienced engine trouble shortly after departing Vancouver for an Alaska cruise, forcing it to return to port for overnight testing. Passengers missed a planned stop in Sitka, Alaska. Earlier, on June 29, technical problems caused the ship to skip Icy Strait Point and scenic cruising in Tracy Arm Fjord, with affected passengers receiving onboard credit equal to one day of their cruise fare.</p><p>Some passengers affected by the canceled Alaska cruise expressed their frustration on Reddit. One user described the situation as an "immense disappointment" regarding a birthday cruise. Another user noted the limited availability of amenities on board. Several online commenters expressed sympathy for those inconvenienced by the cancellation, while others voiced concerns about future trips with the cruise line. Serenade of the Seas welcomed passengers aboard again on September 6 for its next seven-day, round-trip Alaska cruise, as reported by the "Royal Caribbean Blog" on September 7.</p>
