Dozens of events this week will honor the memories of those killed during the September 11, 2001 terror attacks and the first responders who survived. The 25th anniversary of the attacks, which resulted in the deaths of 2,977 civilians and first responders, will take place on Friday, September 11, 2026. Hundreds more have since died from illnesses and injuries related to the attacks.
Major events in New York City include:
- The NYPD Detectives’ Endowment Association will host a wreath-laying ceremony at Ground Zero on Tuesday at 11:45 a.m., attended by Governor Kathy Hochul, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, and the family of two brothers who died on 9/11. The ceremony will honor NYPD Detective Joseph V. Vigiano, FDNY Firefighter John Vigiano, and NYPD Detective Claude “Dan” Richards, as well as 79 NYPD detectives who later died from related illnesses.
- A new remembrance wall will be dedicated by the NYPD on Wednesday at One Police Plaza, honoring nearly 500 first responders who died or suffered from illnesses connected to the attacks.
- The American Council of Engineering Companies of New York will host an event on Thursday titled “Engineering Resilience: 25 Years of Rebuilding, Remembrance and Renewal,” featuring discussions on the response to the attacks and subsequent building code regulations. This event will take place at The Union League Club starting at 8 a.m.
- More than 200 firefighters will conclude a 343-mile cycling journey from Boston at the World Trade Center on Thursday, culminating in a moment of silence at the 9/11 Memorial and a ceremony at Battery Park at 2 p.m.
- St. Patrick’s Cathedral will hold a special Mass at 5 p.m. on Thursday, which will be livestreamed.
- A second ceremony is scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m. after the annual 9/11 Memorial & Museum ceremony, featuring performances by the NYPD pipe and drum band and other bands.
- A piece of steel recovered from Ground Zero will return to the World Trade Center on Friday, with a ceremony retracing FDNY hero Stephen Siller's final journey at 5 a.m.
- The annual remembrance ceremony at Ground Zero will begin at 8:40 a.m. on Friday, with moments of silence starting at 8:46 a.m. to mark the time when hijacked Flight 11 struck the North Tower.
- The Tribute in Light will illuminate the skies above New York City from Friday evening until dawn on Saturday, with many buildings across the city also participating.
- The New York Mets and Yankees will hold a game on Friday at 6:30 p.m., featuring a ceremony to honor the anniversary.
- The NYPD Pipes and Drums will perform at a concert at the Infosys Theater at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, with a post-concert party at the Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom.
- The 9/11 Memorial & Museum will open a new exhibition on Saturday titled “In Their Honor: 25 Years of 9/11-Inspired Service,” showcasing how communities have transformed their grief into action since the attacks.
