Netanyahu Warned of Hamas Attack Days Before October 7 Incident, Report Claims

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was warned by United Arab Emirates President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan about a potential attack planned by Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar approximately ten days before the October 7 incident, according to a report by Haaretz. The warning was conveyed during a 45-minute conversation, where the Emirati leader expressed concerns that Sinwar was preparing a significant operation. Netanyahu reportedly dismissed the threat, believing Hamas was focused on the West Bank, and did not inform his security chiefs about the warning. The report indicates that former Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar and former IDF chief of staff Herzi Halevi were not made aware of the conversation. The warning was prompted by intelligence from a Palestinian intermediary who had connections with both Hamas and Israeli security officials. Sinwar had allegedly indicated through this intermediary in September 2023 that he was planning a major operation, which he described as 'the mother of all surprises.' This intelligence was reportedly received by Shin Bet on September 15, leading Bar to brief Netanyahu and recommend either offensive action or enhanced defenses around Gaza and the West Bank. Additionally, Egyptian intelligence chief Abbas Kamel also contacted Netanyahu around the same time to alert him about Hamas's plans. However, Netanyahu maintained that Israel was in control and did not mention either warning during an October 1 security discussion regarding Hamas and Gaza. The Prime Minister's Office denied the allegations, stating that Netanyahu did not speak with the Emirati president or receive any warning. In contrast, former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett supported the report, asserting that he was aware of the warnings given to Netanyahu.
