Arlington County, Virginia, Allocates Funds for Families of Detained Wage Earners

<p>Leaders in Arlington County, Virginia, approved a program on September 2 to allocate $50,000 to support families where the primary wage earner has been detained by federal immigration authorities. The Arlington County Board voted 4-0 to appropriate the funds, which will be distributed by Arlington Thrive, an organization that partners with the county government.</p><p>Eligible families will receive up to $2,000 for the loss of the primary wage earner, with Arlington Thrive aiming to assist between 25 to 30 families, according to the board's agenda.</p><p>Board Chair Matt de Ferranti stated, "We stand with our immigrant families, and we will not stop doing so. We are valuing the families of those that have been displaced and removed." The decision was made in response to increased immigration enforcement efforts in the Washington, D.C., area.</p><p>Board Vice Chair Maureen Coffey emphasized the importance of providing emergency assistance for families facing challenging situations, stating, "Ensuring that we take care of our community and our residents and our people does mean making sure that we have emergency assistance available for what is probably one of the most challenging situations that you could possibly face. I'm very proud of us for doing this."</p><p>The funds will be distributed to families in the form of debit cards and checks. Elizabeth Matlock, a staff member in the county manager’s office coordinating the effort, mentioned that the organization is ready to begin issuing funds.</p><p>The vote occurred as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted over 1,300 arrests of illegal immigrants in the Washington, D.C., suburbs within a two-week period last month. Among those arrested, nearly 400 had criminal convictions or pending charges, including serious offenses.</p>
