The seat was vacated by Senator Jeanne Shaheen, a Democrat who is retiring after three terms and endorsed Pappas to succeed her. Recent polling from the University of New Hampshire indicated that Pappas was trailing Sununu in a potential general election matchup. The Senate Leadership Fund, a Republican super PAC, plans to spend $17 million in the state for the general election, while the Senate Majority PAC, a Democratic super PAC, has announced plans for $10.2 million in television advertising.
Pappas has been a prominent figure in New Hampshire politics, previously serving three terms on the state’s Executive Council and holding various positions including treasurer of Hillsborough County. If elected, he would become the first openly gay male senator.
