US Open Women's Doubles Match Features Confrontation Between Hsieh Su-wei and Chan Hao-ching

<p>A personal feud between Taiwanese tennis players Hsieh Su-wei and Chan Hao-ching was highlighted during a Women’s Doubles Round of 16 match at the US Open. Hsieh and her partner, Jeļena Ostapenko, defeated Chan and Maya Joint in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.</p><p>During the match, Ostapenko and Hsieh accused Chan’s coach of taunting them from the player’s box by sarcastically applauding their unforced errors and double faults in Mandarin. Hsieh translated these remarks for Ostapenko, who described the behavior as disrespectful and requested a Chinese translator on the court, stating: "They do this because they know they cannot beat us, because they’re so much worse than us."</p><p>After winning match point, Ostapenko celebrated by directing a scream towards Chan's coaching box. At the net, Chan shook Ostapenko’s hand but did not acknowledge Hsieh, walking past her without extending a hand or making eye contact.</p><p>The ongoing animosity between the players is rooted in competition for resources and support from the Chinese Taipei Tennis Association. Hsieh has accused the association of favoring Chan and her sister, Latisha Chan, in terms of funding and coaching opportunities. This tension escalated during the 2016 Rio Olympics when Hsieh's coach was overlooked in favor of the Chans, leading Hsieh to withdraw from the Games in protest.</p>
