Maggie Goodlander Advances to General Election in New Hampshire

<p>Rep. Maggie Goodlander, a Democrat from New Hampshire, won her primary election and will advance to the general election in a district that leans Democratic, covering the western half of New Hampshire from Massachusetts to the Canadian border.</p><p>Goodlander, who is married to former Biden National Security Adviser Jacob Sullivan, is running for the seat previously held by retiring Rep. Ann Kuster, also a Democrat.</p><p>While Republicans have held the governor's office in New Hampshire in recent years, Democrats have been successful at the congressional level. The district has been represented by Democrats since 2013, with prior representation by Republican Rep. Charles Bass, who served two extended terms with a brief interruption by a Democrat in the mid-1990s.</p><p>Goodlander faced New Hampshire State Rep. Paige Beauchemin in the primary, and there is also an independent candidate running in the general election. Lily Tang Williams won a four-way Republican primary and will be Goodlander's opponent in November.</p><p>Jacob Sullivan's role in the Biden administration included significant involvement during the Afghanistan withdrawal in 2021, as well as in foreign relations during the early stages of the Russia-Ukraine War and managing U.S.-China relations.</p><p>Beauchemin, running from the left, criticized Goodlander for not being sufficiently progressive or effective during her first term. The district is characterized as more rural and includes cities such as Pittsburg in northern New Hampshire.</p><p>The political landscape in New Hampshire is expected to change, particularly with Rep. Chris Pappas, a Democrat, not seeking re-election as he runs for the Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Jeanne Shaheen.</p>
