Microsoft Addresses Record Number of Vulnerabilities in September Patch Release

<p>Microsoft's patch release for September addresses approximately 972 vulnerabilities, with 112 categorized as high critical-severity. This marks a significant increase from the previous record of 570 vulnerabilities patched two months ago and 620 patched last month.</p><p>In recent months, companies like Google have also reported record numbers of vulnerabilities. An open letter was published two weeks ago by OpenAI, Anthropic, Amazon Web Services, Google, Microsoft, and 100 other organizations, warning about a narrowing window for patching vulnerabilities in light of anticipated AI-enabled attacks that could exploit these weaknesses. The industry is responding by increasing the number of patches released for their software.</p><h2>Industry Response</h2><p>Dustin Childs, a researcher at the Zero Day Initiative, described the increase in vulnerabilities as the “new normal” and noted that the potential damage from AI-assisted attacks could be significant.</p>
