NIH Allocates Part of Budget for Department of Defense Research

<p>On September 8, 2026, it was reported that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has reached an agreement with the Department of Defense (DoD) to allocate part of its budget for research at the DoD. The DoD confirmed the signing of the agreement, which occurred approximately a month prior, through a release of the agreement document.</p><p>The agreement establishes a framework for the NIH to transfer funds to the DoD to support the development of medical countermeasures against pandemic influenza, chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) threats, as well as emerging infectious diseases. The funding will be sourced from the budget of the NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), which has been allocated $6.6 billion for the fiscal year 2026. The agreement is expected to last for a decade.</p><p>The specific amount of the NIAID budget designated for Defense projects remains unspecified. According to reporting by Nature, the DoD initially sought up to one-third of its total budget but was advised to accept around 10 percent. There is a significant budget disparity between the two agencies, with the 2026 Defense budget estimated at approximately $1 trillion. However, this budget is under pressure due to ongoing conflicts, particularly with Iran. Additionally, the NIH is currently facing challenges in issuing sufficient grants to utilize the funds allocated by Congress.</p>
