UK Government Plans to Protect Homeowners from Rogue Builders

Sheri Ingram reported that a builder, Lee Slocombe, defrauded her of £14,000 after he began work on her home in Aberbeeg, Blaenau Gwent. Slocombe was jailed for six years in February for defrauding nine victims of a total of £400,000. The UK government announced plans in August to create a database of trusted traders to provide homeowners with greater protections against rogue builders. Ingram expressed concerns about the effectiveness of the voluntary scheme, questioning the incentive for tradespeople to participate. Slocombe's history of offending spans over a decade, during which he used false identities and left homes in dangerous conditions. Ingram stated that better protections are necessary due to the significant power imbalance between homeowners and builders. Prime Minister Andy Burnham acknowledged the stress caused by unscrupulous tradespeople and emphasized the need for accountability. A survey indicated that over a quarter of homeowners experienced issues with builders, resulting in losses exceeding £10 billion in 2024. Other victims, like Barry and Shelley Sawkins, shared their experiences of financial loss and unfinished work due to rogue builders. The Federation of Master Builders raised concerns about the voluntary nature of the government's scheme, while Minister Kate Dearden assured that the government would monitor its impact closely.
