Stefany Shaheen Wins Democratic Primary in New Hampshire's 1st Congressional District

<p>Stefany Shaheen, the daughter of retiring Senator Jeanne Shaheen, won the Democratic primary early Wednesday morning in New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District. This race has attracted multiple Democratic candidates.</p><p>Her victory positions her for a significant race as Democrats aim to gain control of the House of Representatives, following the announcement by incumbent Rep. Chris Pappas, D-N.H., of his bid for the U.S. Senate.</p><p>Pappas, who has represented the district since 2019, stated in a press release, "I’m honored that the people of New Hampshire have entrusted me to fight for them; I’m proud of what we have accomplished together and I’m going to continue this fight in the U.S. Senate." He last won reelection with 54.0% of the vote against Republican challenger Russell Prescott.</p><p>The primary attracted several Democratic challengers, including Maura Sullivan, a Marine veteran and former Obama administration official, Carleigh Beriont, a union organizer, and Christian Urrutia, an Army National Guard officer. Urrutia later dropped out and endorsed Shaheen, who became a frontrunner.</p><p>Senator Jeanne Shaheen, who announced her retirement last March, endorsed her daughter, stating, "I’m so proud that Stefany is answering the call to serve the district she was born and raised in, where she has started a business, worked on the Portsmouth City Council and advocated for affordable health care and clean water. She’s working hard to earn voters’ support in her own right and on her own merits — and I couldn’t be prouder to support her candidacy."</p><p>Stefany Shaheen's campaign emphasizes priorities such as Medicare for All, expanding tax breaks for first-time homebuyers, and overhauling Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).</p><p>Sullivan, in her campaign, highlighted her military service, work with the Obama administration, and leadership in the private sector. She aims to address issues like price gouging, bolster the VA, oppose tariffs, and increase federal investments in housing development.</p><p>Having won the primary, Shaheen will advance to the general election scheduled for November 3.</p>
