Marco Rubio Designates Ecuadorian Gang Los Tiguerones as Terrorist Group

<p>Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on September 9, 2026, that he has designated the Ecuador-based gang Los Tiguerones as a Foreign Terrorist Organization and Specially Designated Global Terrorist.</p><p>According to Rubio, Los Tiguerones is linked to narcotrafficking and other illicit activities, funding criminal actions against law enforcement and civilians.</p><p>Rubio stated, "Los Tiguerones is yet another Ecuadorian gang helping Mexican cartels move and export illicit drugs to fund terrorism and criminal activity including attacks against civilians, law enforcement, and journalists," in a post on X.</p><p>He also noted that the group was responsible for the live takeover of an Ecuadorian television station in 2024.</p><p>This designation follows the earlier designation of three other groups, including Los Lobos and Los Choneros, in July.</p><p>Rubio emphasized, "They're not ordinary. These are violent, bloodthirsty terrorist organizations. And we have to make sure that we continue to pursue them." The announcement was made during Rubio's visit to Quito, Ecuador, as part of a three-nation tour aimed at strengthening economic and security ties with Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia.</p>
