Woman Attacked by Unleashed Dog in San Francisco's Tenderloin Neighborhood

A woman was attacked by a pit bull on the streets of San Francisco after the dog was left unleashed by its owner. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning in the Tenderloin neighborhood, where the dog reportedly attacked the woman for ten to fifteen minutes. Witnesses attempted to intervene using pepper spray. The attack took place approximately a quarter mile from the local police station. When police arrived, they used a catch pole to restrain the dog. The dog and its owner are known to frequent the area, but it is unclear if the dog is typically leashed. A video from the Citizen app showed the woman on the ground with the dog beside her, covered in blood. Witnesses reported conflicting instructions to police regarding how to handle the dog. The woman sustained severe injuries to her left hand, wrist, right hand, and knee, and was taken to San Francisco General Hospital in critical condition, where she was placed on a ventilator. The dog died at the scene, and its remains were collected by San Francisco Animal Care and Control. The cause of the dog's death is unknown, but some witnesses claimed it died due to rough handling by police. The identity of the woman has not been released, although there is speculation about her being homeless. Tenderloin supervisor Bilal Mahmood commented on social media, stating that this incident is not isolated and that efforts are underway to address similar incidents in the neighborhood. The San Francisco Police Department's Dangerous Dogs Unit has resumed its hearings after a ten-month hiatus due to funding issues. Since January, the unit has received 729 reports of dog bites, with 30-40 percent occurring in the Tenderloin.
