Trump Predicts End of Iran War After US Midterm Elections

United States President Donald Trump stated that the war in Iran could conclude after the upcoming US midterm elections. "This war will end immediately after our election," Trump told reporters on Wednesday before departing for Dallas, Texas. He suggested that the Iranian government is delaying the end of the war to influence the political landscape in the US. The Democratic Party is aiming to gain control of one or both chambers of Congress in the elections on November 3, while Trump's Republican Party currently holds narrow majorities in both. Trump claimed that Iran is attempting to affect the elections to facilitate a political environment favorable to them. He expressed concern that Iran seeks to develop a nuclear weapon, stating, "All they want is a nuclear weapon, and if they had a nuclear weapon, the whole world is in deep trouble." The war against Iran commenced on February 28, with the US and Israel citing Iran's nuclear program as a primary justification for military action. Iran has consistently denied aspirations for a nuclear weapon, asserting that its uranium enrichment is intended for civilian energy purposes. US intelligence has also raised doubts about Iran's nuclear ambitions, although concerns about enrichment levels persist. Trump had previously exited the 2015 nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which aimed to limit Iran's uranium enrichment. When asked about the possibility of resuming negotiations with Iran regarding a nuclear deal, Trump indicated that his focus extends beyond just nuclear issues. "I’m doing much more than a nuclear deal. There’s a lot more than nuclear," he stated, while also noting that negotiations with Iran are not a current priority for the US government. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright mentioned on Sunday that a nuclear deal may not be forthcoming and suggested that the US might continue military actions to undermine Iran's nuclear capabilities. The US conducted targeted strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities during the 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel in June 2025. Trump's remarks come amid declining public support for the war, with a recent poll indicating that only 31 percent of Americans favor the conflict, a decrease from 37 percent in March. On Wednesday, oil prices surpassed $100 a barrel due to escalating tensions between the US and Iran, which could lead to increased consumer costs globally. The US military reported striking five Iranian tankers on Tuesday in response to missile attacks on a US Navy warship. Trump indicated that further US military actions would occur, stating, "You’re going to see a lot more."
