Marco Rubio Designates Ecuadorian Gang Los Tiguerones as Terrorist Organization

<p>On September 9, 2026, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the designation of the Ecuador-based gang Los Tiguerones as a foreign terrorist organization and specially designated global terrorist. The group has been linked to narcotrafficking and various illicit activities, including funding criminal actions against law enforcement and civilians.</p><p>Rubio stated, "Los Tiguerones is yet another Ecuadorian gang helping Mexican cartels move and export illicit drugs to fund terrorism and criminal activity including attacks against civilians, law enforcement, and journalists." He also noted that the group was involved in a notable attack on an Ecuadorian television station in 2024, during which armed assailants took staff hostage during a live broadcast.</p><p>According to reports from The Associated Press, during the raid, attackers forced staff to the floor at gunpoint and allegedly placed a stick of dynamite into an employee’s pocket. The incident lasted approximately 15 minutes on live television before the broadcast was cut off, and at least 13 suspects were arrested after police regained control.</p><p>Rubio's announcement follows the designation of three other groups, including Los Lobos and Los Choneros, in July. He described these organizations as "violent, bloodthirsty terrorist organizations" and emphasized the need to continue pursuing them.</p><p>While visiting Quito, Ecuador, as part of a three-nation tour to strengthen economic and security ties with Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia, Rubio stated that the U.S. would also target corrupt officials accused of collaborating with terrorists. He mentioned plans to announce the designation of seven former government members for accepting bribes and failing to fulfill their duties.</p><p>This designation will restrict these terrorist groups from accessing U.S. financial assets, property, and other resources that could facilitate attacks. Rubio reiterated the U.S. commitment to combating narcoterrorism, stating, "We will never stop fighting against the violent narcoterrorists who flood our nation with deadly drugs." He added that the actions taken by the State Department reflect the Trump Administration's commitment to dismantling cartels and narcoterrorist networks in the region to ensure American safety.</p>
