Dozens of Parakeets Found Dead in London Park, Allegedly Targeted by Youths with Catapults

Dozens of parakeets have been found dead in Priory Gardens, Orpington, southeast London, allegedly targeted by youths armed with catapults. A wildlife charity reported that 43 ring-necked parakeets were discovered in the park over a three-week period. According to the Greenwich Wildlife Network, groups of youths wait for the birds to roost in trees after dark, using bright lights to disorient them before firing catapults. Ball bearings, nuts, and bolts have been found scattered in the area. Some recovered animals exhibited deep circular wounds and severe fractures consistent with projectile impacts. One parakeet was found alive in the park's lake with a significant chest wound but died shortly after being rescued. Rae Gellel, director of the Greenwich Wildlife Network, stated that reports of animal attacks in Priory Gardens have been ongoing since 2020. She described the situation as disturbing, noting that animals are not only being killed but also horrifically maimed. Gellel suggested that one motive for the attacks may be to share footage of the killings on social media platforms like TikTok, turning acts of cruelty into content for attention. She emphasized that the issue extends beyond parakeets, affecting various wildlife species over the years. The charity is advocating for stricter regulations on the sale of catapults to minors and for wildlife crime to receive greater attention from law enforcement. Gellel expressed frustration over the persistence of these attacks, which have reportedly continued for six or seven years. While ring-necked parakeets are a non-native species and can be controlled under specific legal conditions, this does not permit indiscriminate harm. The Greenwich Wildlife Network has campaigned against catapult violence and organized a protest march in Orpington. A parliamentary petition is also underway, calling for parental accountability for wildlife crimes committed by children. The petition, initiated by Linda Giblin, has garnered nearly 2,000 signatures and will remain open until January 27, 2027. Gareth Bacon, the Conservative MP for Orpington, has previously advocated for licensing catapult sales. A spokesperson for Bromley Council acknowledged the community's concern regarding the distressing maiming and killing of birds, including parakeets, and thanked local residents for their vigilance.
