<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/tag/texas/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Texas</a> Democratic gubernatorial candidate <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/campaigns/state/4480149/who-is-gina-hinojosa-greg-abbott-challenger-texas-governor-race/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Gina Hinojosa</a> announced her support for President <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/tag/donald-trump/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Donald Trump’s</a> proposal for a $5,000 dividend to U.S. adults, contingent on it being decoupled from the outcome of the 2026 midterm elections.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Right now, Americans are paying into a system that’s spending, at least, billions on grift, and it’s time for that money to go back into people’s pockets,” Hinojosa stated. “I support Trump’s idea to send $5,000 checks to Texans, but it can’t be about who’s in power – it has to be about giving the people their power back.”</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hinojosa is running against three-term Governor <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/tag/greg-abbott/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Greg Abbott</a> (R-TX) in the upcoming election. As part of her campaign, she has proposed a “Corruption Tax Refund” of $1,500 for Texans on her first day in office if elected governor.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During his GOP midterm convention speech in Texas, Trump promised American adults a $5,000 check if Republicans retain control of both the House and Senate after the midterm elections. He indicated that the funds would need to be spent within the United States.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them, because of our economic, tremendous economic success — in history we’ve never had anything like what’s happening — but because of our tremendous strength and success economically, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000,” Trump said on Thursday.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Trump also clarified that he could not distribute the checks at present due to concerns about wasteful spending by Democrats, as he stated in a Fox News interview on <em>The Ingraham Angle</em>.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The Democrats can’t do it because with them it’s negative growth,” Trump said.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Abbott is scheduled to speak at the convention on Thursday evening between 6 and 7 p.m. The <em>Washington Examiner</em> has reached out to Abbott’s campaign for comment regarding Hinojosa’s statement and Trump’s dividend proposal.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hinojosa, who emphasizes an affordability-focused economic platform termed “money in your pocket,” stated that her proposed dividend check would be funded by Texas’s Economic Stabilization Fund, which is supported by taxpayers.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Analysts suggest that the race between Abbott and Hinojosa favors the incumbent, with the Cook Political Report designating the race as “likely Republican.” Most <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/polls/texas-governor-election-polls-2026.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">polling</a> has shown Abbott leading by single digits.</p>
