Florida State University Fires Athletic Director Michael Alford

<p>Florida State University (FSU) has fired athletic director Michael Alford following two challenging seasons for the football program. The decision was announced on Monday morning.</p><p>This action follows a disappointing performance by the Seminoles against Southern Methodist University (SMU) last week, which included a power outage at the stadium.</p><p>Concerns regarding Alford's leadership had been raised in recent weeks, particularly related to the direction of the Seminoles' athletic department and issues with fundraising.</p><p>Since the beginning of the 2023 season, FSU's football team has recorded a record of 8 wins and 13 losses, with fans expressing dissatisfaction with head coach Mike Norvell.</p><p>With Alford's dismissal, associate athletic director Bruce Warwick will serve as the interim athletic director. This change indicates that the Florida State Board of Trustees is considering further adjustments within the athletic department.</p><p>Although Alford did not hire Norvell, his decisions during his tenure have significantly influenced the future of the football program. Notably, he was involved in securing funding for a $380 million upgrade to Doak Campbell Stadium, while the university has struggled with revenue-sharing compared to other programs.</p><p>Norvell's current record stands at 39 wins and 35 losses, and he has faced scrutiny due to an 8-18 record since the 2023 season. It is estimated that firing Norvell would cost the university approximately $50 million.</p><p>Peter Collins, chairman of the Florida State Board of Trustees, stated, "We have made significant investments and structural changes in our athletics program and Seminole Boosters over the past few years, but more are needed. This step begins the next phase of restructuring that the University must commit to in order to compete in this era of college sports. The President and the Board are in lockstep on the mission and what the results must be."</p><p>In 2023, Florida State also initiated legal action against the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) regarding a grant of rights contract, which resulted in a reduction of the buyout for member schools.</p><p>With speculation about a potential move to the Big Ten or Southeastern Conference (SEC), the university recognizes the need to improve its internal operations.</p><p>FSU's upcoming game against Alabama could be pivotal for Norvell's future, as many within the athletic department believe his position is precarious.</p><p>The university's next steps will involve appointing a new athletic director who will oversee future coaching decisions, including potential firings.</p><p>With Alford's departure, the focus now shifts to how long Norvell will remain in his position if the team's performance does not improve.</p>
