Elon Musk Joins Rivals in Call for AI Development Caution

<p>Elon Musk, along with several leaders in the artificial intelligence sector, has called for a slowdown in the development of AI technologies. This statement follows comments from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who suggested it is time to 'pace the frontier' of AI development.</p><p>Musk endorsed Amodei's views by sharing his article with his 241 million followers on X, stating, 'Dario is right.' Amodei expressed concerns that advanced AI could lead to issues such as losing control of AI systems, cyberattacks, bioterrorism, and significant economic disruption. He advocated for regulation as a means to manage the technology effectively.</p><p>Vice President JD Vance expressed skepticism about AI companies seeking government regulation, stating, 'It feels a little bit to me like a bit of a Trojan horse.' Musk has been an advocate for AI regulation for several years, previously commending Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for efforts to establish regulatory frameworks.</p><p>In his article, Amodei proposed the concept of 'embedded evaluators' within AI companies, who would have access to company resources to verify commitments and provide independent assessments. He urged other companies to adopt similar practices.</p><p>Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, supported Musk and Amodei's call for caution, noting that it has been a significant topic of discussion at OpenAI. This dialogue marks a rare consensus among Musk, Altman, and Amodei, who lead competing AI firms.</p><p>In contrast, Palantir CEO Alex Karp argued against pausing AI development, citing the competitive advantage it provides. He stated, 'If we didn’t have adversaries, I would be very in favor of pausing this technology completely, but we do.'</p><p>Former President Donald Trump sided with Karp, opposing additional regulations and asserting that slowing down American AI development would benefit China. He emphasized the need for strong leadership in managing AI, stating, 'The only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT.'</p><p>Trump further claimed that there is a conspiracy against AI and data centers, suggesting that only China benefits from such actions.</p>
