The Kennedy Center Board of Trustees is planning to propose adding President Donald Trump’s name to the facility’s exterior in recognition of his role in addressing its financial challenges, according to a court filing related to a lawsuit aimed at blocking this action. This development is part of ongoing discussions regarding the potential addition of Trump’s name to the cultural and arts facility located along the Potomac River in Washington.
Democratic Rep. Joyce Beatty of Ohio, an ex-officio member of the board, has been leading efforts to prevent Trump’s name from being added. In her court filing, she indicated that the proposal could affect a pending court decision. Both the court and the Kennedy Center board are scheduled to meet on Tuesday.
Beatty’s filing includes two exhibits: one is a draft vote suggesting the center be shut down due to safety concerns, which she claims misrepresents a consulting group's findings. The other document highlights the center's financial difficulties and proposes that Trump’s name be inscribed in marble beneath the center’s name. It offers ten options for the inscription, including phrases acknowledging Trump’s support through the Trump Kennedy Center Fund.
The board stated that recognition of Trump is crucial for him to oversee the renovation and financial recovery of the center. Trump has been involved in various projects during his second term, including significant renovations in Washington. A previous court ruling in May determined that Trump’s name had been added to the building illegally, leading to ongoing disputes over the matter. Last month, the board voted to inscribe his name on the venue’s facade, stating it would read, 'The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated By President Donald J. Trump.' Additionally, if the Trump Kennedy Center Fund reaches $100 million, another inscription would be added to recognize the fund's contributions.
