Senator Mitch McConnell Returns to Capitol Hill After 92 Days

His return coincided with the Senate's resumption from a five-week recess.</p><p>McConnell, who appeared frail and was in a wheelchair, made a brief statement to reporters outside the Senate chamber before being wheeled onto the Senate floor. He joked, "I must admit, after two years, two decades after dodging your questions, I wasn’t sure how many of you would be here today. So I’m glad to see you. Time to get back to work to finish the job for this Congress. I’m here to work on the farm bill."</p><p>He also indicated a focus on NATO and supporting allies against Russia. McConnell did not address questions regarding his absence, and reporters were not permitted to record his comments.</p><p>Accompanied by his chief of staff Terry Carmack and communications director Stephanie Penn, McConnell was greeted by several senators, including GOP Senators Roger Wicker, James Lankford, John Curtis, and Bernie Moreno, as well as Democratic Senator Dick Durbin, who welcomed him back.</p><p>Prior to his return, there was an increased police presence outside McConnell’s home, though it was unclear if this was related to his return or the media presence. He was seen leaving his home in a wheelchair and entering a waiting SUV, giving a thumbs-up gesture.</p><p>In a statement released upon his return, McConnell noted, "Today, I’ll cast my first Senate vote since I took a bad fall back in June. I’m really looking forward to being back on the Senate floor and seeing my colleagues." He described his recovery as a "long and often frustrating process" and acknowledged the lingering effects of childhood polio.</p><p>McConnell confirmed that he would continue physical therapy and expressed gratitude for the well wishes from Kentuckians. He also mentioned that he had received approximately $43,500 in salary during his absence while missing 60 votes in the Senate.</p><p>As Senate staffers arrived for the vote, there were murmurs about McConnell's return, with one staffer exclaiming, "He’s back," in a lighthearted manner.</p>
