Exxon Mobil Refinery in Illinois Investigates Power Outage

The Exxon Mobil refinery in Channahon, Illinois, reported a major power outage on Sunday that halted diesel and gasoline production at the facility. The outage occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. and power was restored around 7 p.m. The refinery utilized its safety flare system to manage excess pressure resulting from the outage, which produced visible black smoke. Patrick De Haan, a petroleum analyst, explained that the flare system is designed to handle sudden power interruptions, as refineries operate under high heat and pressure. The facility produces about 275,000 barrels, or 11 million gallons, of gasoline and diesel fuel daily, and the outage has disrupted this production. De Haan noted that the refinery contributes nearly 10% of the regional fuel supply and that the timing of the outage is less critical than it would be in spring or summer. On Monday, refinery workers began assessing the situation to determine the cause of the outage, and an Exxon Mobil spokesperson stated they are coordinating with relevant agencies and conducting air monitoring. The spokesperson emphasized the safety of the community and workforce as a priority. The national average price of diesel recently surpassed $6 per gallon, raising concerns about potential impacts on fuel prices due to the outage. While De Haan is monitoring the market, he indicated that the outage has not yet affected prices significantly. Exxon Mobil has not provided a timeline for resuming normal operations, but estimates suggest it could take up to a week, with potential losses in the millions of dollars for each day the refinery remains offline.
