Kennedy Center Board Votes to Close Venue Amid Trump Naming Dispute and Financial Concerns

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Kennedy Center board voted on Tuesday to close most of the performing arts venue following a federal judge's ruling that blocked the institution from restoring President Donald Trump's name to the building. In a social media post, Trump stated that the closure was necessary for safety repairs, which Congress has allocated $257 million to fund, contingent upon the board's approval to add his name to the building. U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper emphasized that memorials for Trump cannot be installed without Congressional approval. Trump, who was appointed chairman of the Kennedy Center by board loyalists last year, participated in the virtual board meeting and indicated that the Justice Department would appeal Cooper's ruling. He mentioned contributing $17 million to an endowment meant to support the institution. The situation has raised concerns about the future of the Kennedy Center, a significant cultural institution where various political figures and celebrities have gathered for decades. The venue's leaders have highlighted the urgent need for renovations, especially after a partial ceiling collapse occurred earlier this month. Trump's push for physical recognition of his contributions has created tensions with many of the institution's supporters and has faced legal challenges. The Kennedy Center board had previously voted to inscribe Trump's name on the facade, contingent on the Trump Kennedy Center Fund reaching $100 million. Cooper ruled in May that the addition of Trump's name was illegal, leading to its removal in June, although scaffolding remained in place where the name was once displayed. The administration has suggested that without recognition of Trump, the Kennedy Center may struggle to secure funding for renovations, potentially leading to its demolition. The proposed plans for the site include a large outdoor amphitheater overlooking the Potomac River.
