NATO Fighter Jet Intercepts Suspected Russian Drone Over Lithuania

An Italian fighter jet operating under NATO has shot down a suspected Russian drone in Lithuanian airspace. The incident occurred on Tuesday when the drone entered Lithuania from Belarus and was intercepted near Pratkunai, a settlement located north of Kaunas, Lithuania's second-largest city. Lithuania’s Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas stated on social media that the drone was carrying an explosive device. Authorities are currently examining debris from the drone to ascertain its origin. Kaunas emphasized the significance of the intervention by the Italian fighter jet, highlighting the importance of NATO alliances. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the incident as part of a broader pattern of aggression against Europe. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul attributed the incident to Russia, asserting that NATO members would not be intimidated. Russian officials have not yet commented on the situation. The drone interception followed a separate incident in which Russia fired flares at a Danish military helicopter monitoring a Russian warship in the Baltic Sea. Poland’s Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz remarked on social media that recent events indicate that Russia's actions pose a threat to European security. The escalation comes after a series of Russian drone strikes on Sunday, which prompted NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to promise increased support for Ukraine. One of the drone strikes targeted a train near the Polish border shortly after a delegation of officials from the UK, US, and Europe had passed through the area. At a press conference, Kaunas warned that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is escalating and that such incidents are likely to continue unless a negotiated settlement is reached, although he noted that “Putin does not want” a peaceful resolution.
