Funeral Held for NYPD Recruit Kamir Lou-Barria Who Died During Training

Funeral services were held on Tuesday for Kamir Lou-Barria, a 30-year-old NYPD recruit who collapsed during a run at the Police Academy on September 7. Family members and colleagues attended the service at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Ozone Park, Queens, where Lou-Barria's daughter, Nidia, was seen grieving alongside her mother, Alexsandra. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch addressed the widow, stating, "Nothing I can say today could more fully capture the depth of what you and your children have lost." Tisch noted that Lou-Barria often spoke of his family during his training, emphasizing their importance in his life. Born in Panama, Lou-Barria moved to the United States in 2014, married Alexsandra in 2019, and had a daughter. He had joined the NYPD in April and had previously worked for the US Postal Service. According to law enforcement sources, Lou-Barria expressed feeling unwell during the run and requested to walk before collapsing. He was conscious for a time after CPR was administered. Both Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Commissioner Tisch visited him in the hospital after his condition deteriorated. The Police Benevolent Association union President, Patrick Hendry, released a statement expressing condolences and support for Lou-Barria's family, highlighting his commitment to serving the community.
