Kosovo Tribunal to Deliver Verdict for Former President Hashim Thaci on War Crimes Charges

Prosecutors have requested a 45-year jail sentence for former Kosovo President Hashim Thaci and three wartime commanders accused of war crimes. The Kosovo war crimes tribunal is set to deliver its verdicts on Wednesday in the case involving Thaci and several commanders accused of murder and torture during Kosovo's break from Serbia. Thaci, 58, faces multiple counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity, including murder, torture, and persecution, alongside three former commanders from the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), a separatist militia that fought Serbian troops. Thaci and the other commanders, Jakup Krasniqi, Rexhep Selimi, and Kadri Veseli, deny the charges. Prosecutors have requested 45-year prison sentences for each of the accused. The case has sparked significant controversy within Kosovo, where Thaci is regarded as a revered figure by many Kosovan Albanians due to his role in the 1998-99 independence war. On Saturday, tens of thousands gathered in Pristina to demand their acquittal, with portraits of the four former KLA fighters displayed throughout the city and a digital clock counting down to the verdicts. One banner read, "In the name of the people, declare them innocent." According to prosecutors, the accused targeted political opponents and civilians perceived as collaborators during their time in the KLA. Thaci's lawyers argued in February that there is no direct evidence linking him to the crimes, stating, "There are no orders in the record from Thaci to perpetrators of crimes. There are no reports from perpetrators of crimes to Thaci," as stated by lawyer Luka Misetic during the trial. Most of the 13,000 individuals who died in the Kosovo war were ethnic Albanians. A 78-day NATO air campaign against Serbian forces concluded the conflict, resulting in approximately one million ethnic Albanian Kosovars being displaced from their homes. Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia in 2008, a move that Serbia does not recognize. Relations between Kosovo and Serbia remain strained, despite ongoing negotiations mediated by the European Union.
