Three fatalities reported due to flooding in Navajo Nation, New Mexico

Indigenous authorities in the United States have confirmed that three individuals, including two adults and a child, have died as a result of flooding in New Mexico. The flooding followed heavy rains that blocked roadways in the region. Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren stated that police responded to reports of individuals being swept away by floodwaters at 12:30 AM local time near Newcomb in northwestern New Mexico. Nygren expressed condolences to the affected community and urged residents to exercise caution in areas impacted by the rainfall. He stated, "There are no words that can ease the pain of losing a loved one so suddenly, and our hearts are especially heavy knowing that three lives were lost. To the family, relatives, and loved ones who are grieving today, we offer our deepest condolences. We pray that you are surrounded by strength, comfort, and the love of your family and community in the difficult days ahead." The National Weather Service (NWS) in Albuquerque issued a special briefing on Tuesday, warning of potential widespread thunderstorms in the coming days, with moisture levels expected to reach record highs for mid-September. NWS Albuquerque announced a Flash Flood Watch for the western third of New Mexico and the South Central Mountains, indicating that flash flooding could occur anywhere in central and northern New Mexico. Heavy rainfall is forecasted across parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah through Thursday, with flash flood warnings and watches issued for various regions. This incident follows a recent event where three hikers were swept away and numerous rescues occurred due to flooding at the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
