Trump Criticizes Federal Reserve After Interest Rate Increase, Supports Warsh

President Donald Trump criticized the Federal Reserve after the board voted on Wednesday to raise interest rates but refrained from criticizing Chairman Kevin Warsh, whom he appointed earlier this year. Speaking with reporters in North Carolina, Trump commented on the interest rate decision, stating that Warsh's effectiveness is limited by the current board's stance. "No matter how good of a job, he’s got a hostile board," Trump said regarding Warsh. The Fed's monetary policy committee voted unanimously to raise its rate target by 0.25 percentage points to a range of 3.75% to 4%. Warsh defended the decision, stating it aims to reduce inflation to reach the committee's 2% target. "Inflation remains elevated. Today’s policy action will support a timelier return to the committee’s 2% goal. This committee will deliver price stability," Warsh said. Trump expressed his view that interest rates are too high and has previously urged the Fed to lower them. Following the announcement, Trump posted on Truth Social suggesting that rates should be as low as 1% but did not mention Warsh. Warsh emphasized the Fed's independence after the rate hike, stating, "Part of the independence of the Federal Reserve is that we stay in our lane." He did not provide details about any discussions with the White House. Trump's previous appointee, Jerome Powell, faced significant pressure from the White House to lower interest rates.
