Ninth Woman's Body Discovered in South Africa Amid Ongoing Investigation

Police in South Africa confirmed the discovery of a ninth woman's body in two months, raising concerns over a series of unexplained deaths east of Johannesburg. The latest victim was found half-naked and wrapped in a sheet on the side of a road in Dawn Park on Thursday morning. Her identity has not yet been released. This follows the deaths of eight other women whose bodies have been discovered since July across Ekurhuleni, a major urban area of Johannesburg. Several of the women were found partially clothed and with injuries, but police have not established whether all the deaths are connected or if a serial killer is involved. President Cyril Ramaphosa stated that "no stone will be left unturned" in the investigation, which he described as causing fear and uncertainty in communities. Among the victims was 38-year-old Elizabeth "Tsontso" Moselakgomo, who disappeared after leaving home for a run and was found three days later behind a hotel in Kempton Park. Other identified victims include Itumeleng Kekana, missing since July, and Dineo Evelyn Motapane, discovered by the roadside in KwaThema on Tuesday. The first body was found in Kempton Park on July 15, with a suspect arrested shortly after, though police have not linked that suspect to the other deaths. Further bodies were discovered in August and September in various locations, including Kempton Park and KwaThema. The latest victim is believed to be in her 30s and reportedly had bruises and stab wounds. Police have formed a multidisciplinary team to investigate the deaths and are pursuing a person of interest. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi emphasized the need for a measured response to the situation. The police have expressed concern over the rise in violent crimes against women and have advised women to take precautions for their safety. Authorities have offered a reward of 400,000 rand (approximately $24,000) for information that could lead to arrests and have urged families with missing relatives to assist in identifying the victims. The situation has sparked alarm in Ekurhuleni, particularly in Kempton Park, amid ongoing concerns about high levels of gender-based violence in South Africa. Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia cautioned against speculation, noting that the incidents appear to be distinct events. According to UN Women, South Africa has one of the highest rates of gender-based violence globally, with women being killed at a rate five times higher than the global average. Last November, the country declared violence against women a national disaster following widespread protests.
