Born in Nebraska, Kyl earned his law degree from the University of Arizona and represented Arizona in Congress for nearly three decades, including a term as Senate minority whip. After leaving the Senate, Kyl joined the lobbying firm Covington and Burling. In 2018, he was appointed by then-Governor Doug Ducey to fill the vacancy left by the death of Senator John McCain, serving for several months before returning to his lobbying role. Kyl played a role in the confirmation of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
