F-16 Fighter Jet Crashes in Grand Traverse County, Michigan

An F-16 fighter jet crashed in Grand Traverse County, Michigan, on September 17, 2026, shortly after the pilot ejected and parachuted to safety. The incident occurred around 2 PM local time near County Road 633 and Blair Townhall Road in Blair Township. Images from the scene depict a large fire and thick smoke rising from the wreckage. The aircraft was identified as an F-16 from the Texas Air National Guard’s 149th Fighter Wing, which was participating in a joint training mission. Sgt. Derek Gutierrez from the 149th Fighter Wing reported that the pilot is receiving medical treatment at a local hospital. Traffic has been blocked in the area, and motorists are advised to avoid the vicinity. Additionally, a shelter-in-place order has been issued for residents nearby. The Texas Air National Guard is currently investigating the incident, referred to as a 'mishap' by a spokesperson. The pilot is reported to be conscious and alert after parachuting to the ground. No other injuries have been reported, according to Michigan State Police. An evacuation order has been issued for those within a mile of the crash site, following the shelter-in-place order for County Road 633, from Jefferson Place to Blair Townhall Road. Eyewitnesses described hearing a 'very loud crash' followed by explosions. Multiple agencies, including the FBI, Michigan State Police, and local fire departments, are present at the crash site.
