Macklemore Repeats Political Statements During Ed Sheeran's Tour Despite Prior Assurances

<p>Stadium owners scheduled to host Ed Sheeran's "The Loop" tour were reportedly assured that rapper Macklemore would not repeat the political statements he made at the first MetLife show, but he did so anyway.</p><p>According to a report published Wednesday by The Wall Street Journal, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft initiated discussions after Macklemore used the stage to express his views on Israel and Gaza. Kraft reached out to Sheeran directly about the matter.</p><p>Kraft, who had Sheeran perform at his wedding in 2022, communicated to Sheeran that if Macklemore intended to accuse Israel of genocide, he would not be permitted to perform at the venue. Kraft characterized Macklemore's comments as "hate speech" rather than free expression and expressed concern over past accusations of antisemitism against the rapper.</p><p>"This decision is not about diminishing the suffering of innocent Palestinians or denying anyone the right to advocate on their behalf. Their pain and loss are real,” Kraft stated. “Standing with the Palestinian people and standing against Hamas, antisemitism and hate should not be mutually exclusive.”</p><p>Kraft informed Sheeran that he was not the only team owner willing to withdraw from the tour if Macklemore continued to make political statements. The expectation was that Macklemore would limit his political commentary to remain on the tour, and promoters had assured this would happen, but he did not comply.</p><p>Faced with the possibility of other NFL owners withdrawing from the tour, including Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, and Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie, Sheeran's promoters decided to cut Macklemore from the lineup. However, this decision led to all of Macklemore's scheduled opening acts and his backing band withdrawing from the tour in solidarity.</p><p>Sheeran, who has maintained a neutral stance on political issues, plans to continue with his scheduled performances without any opening acts.</p><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">So the opening acts cancelled and his own band quit.
