House GOP Lawmaker Criticizes Trump’s Immigration Policy, Faces Backlash from Colleagues

<p>A House GOP lawmaker has faced criticism from her Republican colleagues after releasing a campaign ad that criticizes President Donald Trump's immigration policy. Rep. María Elvira Salazar, R-Fla., released the ad on Thursday, arguing that Trump has gone too far in pursuing individuals without criminal records.</p><p>House Freedom Caucus leaders issued a statement in response, stating, "President Trump’s immigration enforcement efforts should be applauded and continue as is." They emphasized that any individual who enters the country illegally has committed a crime and should be deported, asserting that the government should ensure the dignity of American citizens.</p><p>In the ad, which features Salazar speaking directly to the camera outside the White House, she states, "Mr. President, some of your immigration enforcement efforts have gone too far. Be careful what your advisors are telling you about immigration policy. The same Hispanics who helped you get to the White House in 2024 feel betrayed today."</p><p>Salazar further remarked, "You can be for immigration what Lincoln was for slavery and Reagan was for communism. I’m not talking about giving them amnesty. I’m talking about giving them a dignified life in this promised land. And only you can do that."</p><p>Her comments are notable, as her district voted for Trump by a significant margin in the 2024 election. Salazar is among several Hispanic lawmakers in the House GOP who have expressed concerns that the party may be alienating Hispanic and Latino voters, who have been crucial to Republican successes in recent elections.</p><p>Salazar's district in South Florida is rated R+6 by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, indicating it is likely to remain Republican. However, Democrats are targeting her seat as a potential opportunity to regain control of the House. Previously, Salazar faced criticism from the Freedom Caucus for her bipartisan legislation aimed at reforming the asylum process and providing a legal pathway for undocumented individuals in the U.S. who have not committed crimes.</p><p>The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) responded to Salazar's comments, stating, "DHS is focused on delivering the most HISTORIC mass deportation campaign in American history — exactly as President Trump promised." They added, "Whether Congresswoman Salazar likes it or not, the men and women of ICE are enforcing the laws passed by Congress. To be clear: The only thing America should be giving illegal aliens is a one-way ticket home or a generous $3,000 check for them to self-deport immediately. We will not ignore the rule of law."</p>
