Heavy rain in Tunis, Tunisia, on Thursday led to significant flooding, affecting roads, homes, and essential services. The Greater Tunis region, which has a population of nearly three million, has experienced recurring flooding in recent years. This incident follows severe rains in January that resulted in widespread disruption and fatalities.
Weather warnings were issued prior to the rain, but the announcement to suspend classes was made shortly before it took effect, leading to parents rushing to schools as traffic congestion increased. Videos on social media depicted flooded streets and stranded vehicles, while residents reported power outages and water entering homes.
Fatma, a 35-year-old employee, described the deteriorating conditions as she attempted to return home. She noted that the road conditions worsened rapidly, with some areas becoming unrecognizable due to flooding. Many individuals were left stranded for hours, waiting for public transport that did not arrive.
Intissar, a 33-year-old resident, criticized local authorities for not taking preventive measures before the rainy season, while also acknowledging that residents contribute to the problem by blocking drainage channels with waste.
In August, government officials discussed the need to clean drainage systems and expedite flood-protection projects, with 29 such projects currently underway across the country. The flooding coincides with preparations for a national march in Tunis on Saturday, which is expected to draw attention to the detention of four activists.
Fatma expressed concerns about the lack of reliable public transport, stating that many residents are now seeking to purchase cars as a solution to the recurring flooding issues. The disruption is particularly challenging as students return to schools and universities, further straining the transport system.
She concluded by stating that the ongoing flooding reflects a lack of preparedness from the state, which seems to be caught off-guard by these recurring events.
