Dearborn Resident Files Lawsuit Alleging Discrimination Against Christians

<p>A resident of Dearborn, Michigan, has filed a lawsuit against the city, alleging that it promotes Islam with city funds while discriminating against other religions. The lawsuit claims that the city funded decorations for the Islamic celebration of Ramadan while ignoring requests for equal recognition of Christian and Jewish holidays, according to a complaint filed in federal court on September 15, 2026.</p><p>The lawsuit, filed by Margot Cleveland, a Dearborn resident and senior legal correspondent for The Federalist, argues that the city and Mayor Abdullah Hammoud, a Democrat, have violated the constitutional rights of non-Muslims. Cleveland states, "By selectively permitting and promoting religious expression for Muslims but denying similar expression for Christians and Jews, Defendants have conveyed and effected governmental preference for one faith tradition over another."</p><p>Dearborn has the largest per capita Muslim population in the United States, with over 50% of its residents having roots in the Middle East or North Africa. The lawsuit mentions that Cleveland observed city-sponsored banners celebrating Ramadan and a crescent moon display in a public park in April 2025.</p><p>Through public records requests, Cleveland found that the city spent thousands of taxpayer dollars on these decorations and created Ramadan-themed T-shirts for the police department. She claims that these decorations represent a governmental endorsement of the Islamic faith.</p><p>Additionally, the lawsuit states that Hammoud held a private religious event funded by the city. Cleveland's suit asserts that the city has never commissioned comparable displays for Christian or Jewish observances such as Easter, Passover, Christmas, Rosh Hashanah, or Yom Kippur.</p><p>The lawsuit also alleges that Hammoud has shown hostility towards Christians. It cites an incident where the mayor told a Christian pastor opposed to naming a street after a supporter of designated terrorist organizations that he was not welcome in the city. Hammoud reportedly said, "And although you live here, I want you to know as mayor, you are not welcome here. And the day you move out of the city will be the day that I launch a parade celebrating the fact that you moved out of the city . . . because you are not somebody who believes in coexistence."</p><p>Cleveland's suit claims that Hammoud violated her First Amendment speech rights by directing city officials not to communicate with her and by failing to provide equal recognition for Christian or Jewish holidays. The Daily Wire has reached out to the city for comment.</p><p>The growing presence of Islam in Michigan has become more established in recent years, highlighted by Democrat Abdul El-Sayed's bid to be the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate.</p><p>Last month, a sheik from a mosque in Dearborn Heights stated that Islam and the Shiite faith are “coming to America” and that its followers would help “build America.” Sheikh Ibrahim Yassine said, “We will build America on the basis of moral civilization and Islam.”</p>
