Albanian prosecutors investigate luxury resort project linked to Jared Kushner amid protests

Albanian anti-corruption prosecutors are investigating changes to the protected status of a coastal wetland associated with a luxury resort project linked to Jared Kushner, son-in-law of U.S. President Donald Trump. The Special Prosecution Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) has opened a probe into modifications made to the Vjosa-Narta protected landscape in Zvërnec, which is home to various wildlife species. In 2024, Kushner discussed plans for his firm, Affinity Partners, to develop luxury tourism projects in Albania, including in the Zvërnec area. Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama confirmed that negotiations are ongoing regarding the deal, which is expected to include approximately 10,000 hotel rooms and villas. Protests against the project began in May, leading to increased tensions as security measures were implemented at the site. Following recent protests, two private security companies had their licenses revoked, and around 15 protesters were charged, with the local police chief removed from his position.
