CNN, MS NOW, and Politico Sue Trump Administration Over White House Ban

CNN, Politico, and MS NOW have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration after being barred from the White House. President Donald Trump announced the ban on Friday, accusing the organizations of publishing "fiction or lies" about his administration. The media outlets reported that their journalists were denied access to the White House on Saturday. In a joint statement released on Monday, they stated their intention to pursue legal action to uphold the principle that the government does not dictate press coverage. Major U.S. television networks subsequently announced they would suspend their White House pooled coverage of Trump, which could affect coverage as he travels to New York for the United Nations General Assembly. The First Amendment prohibits the government from restricting press freedom, a principle that courts have traditionally interpreted as preventing discrimination against media based on their reporting content. The statement from CNN, Politico, and MS NOW indicated that the White House revoked their journalists' credentials without notice, which they argue threatens press freedom and the public's right to independent journalism. The lawsuit was filed on Monday in U.S. District Court in Washington, seeking a quick ruling to declare Trump's ban unconstitutional and to prevent enforcement by his aides. Earlier, Trump stated on Truth Social that the White House was not conducting an assault on the free press but was targeting "FAKE NEWS." On Monday morning, major U.S. television networks withdrew from White House pool duties, which involve sharing coverage material among media organizations to reduce costs and space during presidential events. Fox News Washington bureau chief Bryan Boughton communicated via email that the TV pool would not cover designated pool coverage of President Trump, following the White House's actions against CNN. CNN, one of five U.S. news outlets in the White House press pool for live television, was initially scheduled to cover Trump's trip to the UN General Assembly on Monday and Tuesday. However, on Monday morning, CNN's booth in the White House press area was empty, and CNN crews were broadcasting from outside the secured area. Five TV networks, including ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News, and NBC, issued a joint statement emphasizing the public's interest in receiving accurate and independent information about the government, asserting that no administration should restrict a news organization based on its reporting. Currently, the White House media slot remains vacant, with conservative outlet Real America's Voice listed as a secondary crew for Trump's trip to New York, where he is set to meet with Mayor Zohran Mamdani and French President Emmanuel Macron. Trump did not specify which stories or reporting prompted the ban, but he later mentioned it was due to "cumulative stories over the last few years." He also suggested that other media outlets might face similar actions. In February, the White House announced it would take control of the press pool that has access to Trump, which had been managed by the White House Correspondents' Association for over a century. The administration also restricted Associated Press reporters from certain areas due to the outlet's terminology, leading to an ongoing lawsuit. Other administrations have attempted to limit access for specific outlets, but Trump's actions mark a broader exclusion. Trump has frequently criticized news organizations and has initiated legal actions against several outlets, including the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, with some cases resulting in multimillion-dollar settlements.
