Democratic Lawmakers Criticize Trump's $5,000 Payout Promise

<p>President Donald Trump has promised a payout of $5,000 for all Americans if Republicans secure significant victories in the upcoming midterm elections. This pledge has drawn criticism from Democratic lawmakers who describe it as unrealistic and potentially unlawful.</p><p>Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, D-Pa., commented on the promise, stating, "I think it's hysterical. Literally, I think, it's insane. It's effectively a proposed bribe of the American people that we can't afford." Rep. Pete Aguilar, D-Calif., referred to the promise as "fantasy land," adding, "$5,000 checks, plus, you know, puppies and rainbows and ponies."</p><p>Trump made the pledge during a speech at the Republican National Committee’s midterm convention in Dallas earlier this month, contingent on the GOP maintaining control of both the Senate and the House in November.</p><p>Sen. Angela Alsobrooks, D-Md., questioned the feasibility of the payout, stating, "He already has the Senate and the House and the White House, and it's been an unmitigated disaster." Aguilar further remarked, "It's just a campaign promise that he's trying to make to the American public, because he knows he's underwater, and he's not doing well and people are angry."</p><p>Many Democrats dismissed the $5,000 pledge as a lie, with Rep. Christian Menefee, D-Texas, saying, "If you have an opportunity to provide relief to the American people, you should take it. But lying to Americans around election season, what the president has done numerous times, I think it’s sad and shameful."</p><p>Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., expressed skepticism about the promise, stating, "I think it's one more lie, and people aren't going to fall for this."</p><p>Some Republicans have also voiced opposition to Trump's proposal, questioning its viability and the need for congressional approval. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., noted that such approval would be necessary.</p><p>Aguilar reiterated that many Republicans have indicated the promise is unlikely to materialize, emphasizing that it is merely a campaign tactic. Rep. Suhas Subramanyam, D-Va., remarked on Trump's history of unfulfilled promises, asking, "If he does follow through, how are we gonna do it?"</p><p>The proposed payments would cost the federal government approximately $1.2 trillion. Trump has dismissed concerns about affordability, asserting that the U.S. could "easily" manage the payouts.</p><p>Vice President JD Vance suggested that tariff revenue could be a potential source of funding for the payouts and proposed excluding wealthy Americans from receiving the checks to reduce costs. Democrats have urged Trump to prioritize healthcare and other essential services over the proposed payments.</p><p>Subramanyam stated, "I'd rather give people their healthcare and their food assistance back, that'd be way more than $5,000 for most people." Alsobrooks added, "If he really cared about the American people, he would have made sure they had healthcare." Warnock attributed the need for such payments to Trump's policies, saying, "The only reason why Americans would need $5,000 is because of Trump's awful policies. He should fix his policies. He shouldn't wait until after the election."</p>
