New York City Mayor Faces Criticism for Mourning Inmate Charged with Serious Crimes

<p>New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is receiving criticism after posting condolences for the death of an inmate charged with serious crimes. The individual, Luis Alberto Lopez Castillo, died following a court appearance in Queens. Mamdani stated on X, "A person in City custody died yesterday evening following a court appearance in Queens. Department of Correction staff performed CPR until emergency medical services arrived to take him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. I extend my condolences to his family. In line with standard practice, the DOC and its oversight partners will investigate the circumstances of his death."</p><p>Critics have expressed dissatisfaction with Mamdani's lack of details regarding Castillo's alleged crimes. Castillo faced charges of murder, manslaughter, and robbery related to the 2025 murder of Ron Marte, a 26-year-old man with special needs. Prosecutors allege that Castillo and his accomplice ambushed Marte in the Bronx’s Starlight Park, where Martinez shot him while Castillo took his cellphone.</p><p>Many social media users criticized Mamdani for appearing to show more concern for the inmate than for the victim. Fox Business anchor David Asman remarked on X, "Display sympathy for the victims; Not the criminals." Jewish advocacy group StopAntisemitism also questioned the appropriateness of Mamdani's post, stating, "Didn’t he murder a 26-year-old special needs man?"</p><p>Former digital producer for former NYC Mayor Eric Adams, Benny Polatseck, commented on X, "The guy Mamdani is mourning here was charged with robbing and murdering a 26-year-old with special needs. Did you see any tweets from him mourning his helpless victim?"</p><p>Critics have called for Mamdani to resign, with one account stating, "Absolutely shameful… Mamdani should do the right thing and resign from office in disgrace." Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani’s office for comment.</p><p>Mamdani has faced similar backlash previously, including in August when he mourned the death of another inmate with multiple prior arrests who died while facing charges for murder. He has been vocal about his efforts to improve safety and living conditions in the jail system, including ending 12-hour shifts for correctional staff and addressing the housing of individuals of different ages together.</p><p>New York City has been legally committed since 2019 to closing Rikers Island and replacing it with four smaller borough-based jails, a plan Mamdani has pledged to expedite. Critics argue that this move could reduce the number of jail cells available and complicate crime management.</p>
