New York City Mayor Faces Criticism Over Condolences for Deceased Inmate

<p>New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is receiving criticism after expressing condolences for the death of an inmate who was charged with robbing a man with special needs, who was later murdered. Mamdani posted on X, stating, "A person in City custody died yesterday evening following a court appearance in Queens. Department of Correction staff performed CPR until emergency medical services arrived to take him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. I extend my condolences to his family. In line with standard practice, the DOC and its oversight partners will investigate the circumstances of his death."</p><p>The deceased, Luis Alberto Lopez Castillo, faced charges of murder, manslaughter, and robbery related to the 2025 murder of 26-year-old Ron Marte, who had special needs, according to the New York Post. Prosecutors allege that Castillo and his accomplice ambushed Marte in Starlight Park in the Bronx, where Martinez shot Marte while Castillo took his cellphone.</p><p>Critics of Mamdani have pointed out that he did not provide more context about the alleged crime in his post. Fox Business anchor David Asman commented on X, suggesting that the mayor should prioritize sympathy for victims over criminals. Jewish advocacy group StopAntisemitism also questioned Mamdani's focus, asking, "Didn’t he murder a 26-year-old special needs man?"</p><p>Former digital producer for former NYC Mayor Eric Adams, Benny Polatseck, criticized Mamdani for mourning the accused without acknowledging the victim. Conservative influencer account Proud Elephant described the situation as "absolutely shameful" and called for Mamdani's resignation.</p><p>Mamdani has faced similar backlash previously, including in August when he mourned the death of another inmate with a history of arrests. He has advocated for improvements in safety and living conditions in the jail system, including ending 12-hour shifts for correctional staff and addressing age segregation among inmates. His administration is also working on closing Rikers Island and replacing it with smaller borough-based jails, a plan that critics argue could complicate crime management in the city.</p>
