Rep. Ilhan Omar Proposes Legislation to Redirect Immigration Enforcement Funds

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., has introduced legislation aimed at redirecting over $100 billion in funds allocated for immigration enforcement to support communities affected by the Department of Homeland Security's operations. The proposed Make ICE Pay Act would reallocate nearly $140 billion from ICE and Border Patrol funding, originally part of Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill Act, toward local recovery efforts. Omar stated that the funding would assist local jurisdictions in providing economic relief and support for nonprofits, small businesses, schools, healthcare, and psychological services, as well as covering increased local government expenses and memorialization efforts. The program would be managed by the Department of Housing and Urban Development and would last for three years. Omar expressed on X that ICE has negatively impacted communities and emphasized the need for accountability. The bill has faced criticism from conservatives, who argue it undermines immigration law enforcement. Sen. Jim Banks, R-Ind., labeled the bill as 'un-American,' claiming it defunds law enforcement in favor of communities that harbor illegal immigrants. Other critics echoed similar sentiments, arguing that the legislation prioritizes illegal immigrants over American citizens. Additionally, White House border czar Tom Homan confirmed that the Department of Homeland Security is investigating allegations involving Omar, although he did not provide further details. Omar has faced allegations regarding her marriage, which critics claim was part of an immigration scheme, but she has denied these claims, labeling them as 'bigoted lies.'
