Three individuals have been convicted for damaging a protected beauty spot in Wales with their 4x4 vehicles. John Robinson, Michael Williams, and Joseph Hodgson drove from Liverpool to the Berwyn Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) on June 1, 2022, leaving deep tire tracks in rare peat and blanket bog. Natural Resources Wales investigators identified them through videos they posted on TikTok, showing their actions that caused what officials described as 'irreversible damage.'
Hodgson, 23, has been banned from entering the Berwyn SSSI for three years and ordered to pay over £2,000 in fines and compensation after being convicted of criminal damage. He failed to cooperate with the investigation and did not attend an earlier court hearing. Robinson and Williams were also convicted in August and received fines and driving disqualifications.
Kirsty Roberts from Natural Resources Wales emphasized the importance of protecting Sites of Special Scientific Interest, stating that damage to blanket bog can alter water balance for years, affecting wildlife and carbon storage. The incident is part of a broader trend of young people posting videos of illegal activities on social media, prompting calls from officials for social media platforms to take action against such content. Recent tragedies involving dangerous driving have intensified these demands, with the Government supporting measures to hold platforms accountable for harmful content.
