California Governor Gavin Newsom has appointed Katie Porter, the former congresswoman from Orange County, to the California Community Colleges Board of Governors. This appointment comes two months after Porter stated she was 'done, for now, with politics and campaigning.' The position requires state Senate confirmation and pays $100 for each day Porter conducts official business.
In the June gubernatorial primary, Porter finished fifth, receiving 403,908 votes, or 4.4% of the total, according to state election returns. This followed her third-place finish in the 2024 primary for the US Senate seat, which was won by Adam Schiff. After these defeats, Porter expressed a desire to step away from politics, stating, 'Hi, it’s Katie Porter with a nonpolitical post. I’m done for now with politics and campaigning.'
She subsequently changed her Instagram account to 'Katie Porter Turns the Page' and began sharing book reviews, including her latest selection, 'The Mad Wife' by Meagan Church.
Porter’s political career has been marked by her strong advocacy and public persona, often using a whiteboard during congressional hearings to question corporate executives and officials from the Trump administration. She left the House in 2025 after her unsuccessful Senate campaign and has now taken on this new role overseeing California’s community college system.
