South African Police Officer Charged with Sexual Offences

Lt Gen Shadrack Sibiya, a high-ranking police officer in South Africa, has been charged with sexual offences during a brief court appearance in a court north-west of Johannesburg. The charges include allegations that he sexually groomed a 16-year-old girl and raped an 18-year-old woman. Additionally, he faces a charge of trafficking, which may lead to further arrests related to the case. Sibiya, who is the suspended deputy police commissioner, was detained on Monday and has not made any comments regarding the charges. The 59-year-old is scheduled to appear in court again on 29 September for a bail application, with prosecutors expected to oppose bail. The state has also requested a change in the prison where Sibiya will be held due to indications of a potential escape plan, according to reports from the national broadcaster SABC. This case emerges amid a significant public inquiry into police corruption and collusion with criminals, known as the Madlanga Commission, which began last September. The inquiry has included allegations that Sibiya received a gift of 20 impalas from an alleged criminal kingpin in exchange for a police contract.
