Arkansas Senate Candidate Faces Criticism Over Immigration Comments

<p>A Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate from Arkansas is facing scrutiny for comments made on a podcast suggesting that undocumented workers are more valuable than American workers. Hallie Shoffner stated on the "Free Arkansas Podcast" that the immigration system is backlogged and does not assist American employers who want to hire legal workers.</p><p>Shoffner, a farmer, is running against incumbent Senator Tom Cotton, a Republican. During the podcast, she mentioned a conversation with a fellow farmer about labor issues, stating, "Labor is a huge issue, especially when you don't have a large workforce," and acknowledged employing undocumented immigrants in the past.</p><p>She expressed that it is unfair for hardworking undocumented immigrants to be targeted for deportation, saying, "And honestly, we'd trade five Americans just for one of them because of how hard they work." Shoffner advocated for a pathway for undocumented immigrants to work legally in the U.S., claiming they contribute positively to the economy.</p><p>Cotton's campaign responded by accusing Shoffner of implying that she has hired undocumented workers. Campaign spokesman James Arnold stated, "Hallie Shoffner’s campaign isn’t denying that she employed illegal aliens," and called for all Democratic candidates to clarify their stance on her comments.</p><p>Shoffner's campaign manager, Anna-Lee Pittman, defended her comments, asserting they were taken out of context and criticized Cotton for misrepresenting her statements. She noted that Shoffner had previously called for reforms to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and had changed her position from wanting to defund ICE to advocating for its reform.</p><p>Immigration remains a significant issue as the midterm elections approach, similar to its prominence during President Donald Trump's campaign.</p>
