His Chief of Staff, Terry Carmack, who is set to earn $226,000 this year, held an umbrella over McConnell.</p><p>Townsend asked Carmack if it was safe to bring McConnell back to the Senate, but he did not respond. She then inquired if McConnell wanted to go to work, to which he raised his right hand in a "peace" sign, similar to gestures he made previously in response to questions.</p><p>As the vehicle's sliding door closed, McConnell appeared unresponsive. His office did not immediately provide a comment.</p><p>McConnell's prolonged absence from the Senate was attributed to a fall in mid-June followed by pneumonia.
