<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) stated on Tuesday that his committee may consider an investigation into Donald Trump Jr. regarding parts of his wedding funded by a Russian oligarch with ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This consideration follows a written request from Senator John Curtis (R-UT), who asked the committee to investigate the use of presidential family relationships for financial benefit or access by domestic and foreign interests.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Senators John Cornyn (R-TX) and Thom Tillis (R-NC), both outgoing GOP members of the panel, have also expressed support for such an inquiry. Curtis does not serve on the committee.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Grassley noted, “Any individual senator, including Sen. Curtis himself, has power of oversight. It doesn’t necessarily have to be done before committee,” and mentioned that he would take Curtis's request seriously and consult with staff on potential actions.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Trump Jr. has stated that he reimbursed Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev for the significant expenses incurred for the wedding after-party held on a private island in the Bahamas in May. Trump Jr.’s wife, Bettina Anderson, described the event as an “extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend.” Kremlev is the president of the International Boxing Association.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Curtis's letter also suggested that both Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden, son of former President Joe Biden, should be subpoenaed to testify regarding their business dealings that may have been influenced by their familial connections to foreign powers.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Curtis emphasized the need for public confidence in institutions, stating, “Congress has an obligation to pursue credible concerns wherever they lead and without regard to party.”</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Grassley, however, cautioned that the committee may not make significant progress due to the limited time remaining in the current Congress, which concludes in early January. He indicated that the Senate might adjourn as early as the end of the week for the upcoming elections, suggesting that no substantial actions would occur before the midterm elections.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Grassley remarked, “You know my thoroughness and my credibility in investigations and hearings. They take a lot of work to get ready for them. If you were going to ask me when you’re going to have a hearing, there’s no way I could answer that today.”</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Despite this, there appears to be some support within the Republican conference for an investigation. Cornyn backed Curtis’s request, while Tillis suggested that Trump Jr. should voluntarily provide more information regarding the funding of the wedding party. Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA), another retiring member not on the Judiciary Committee, has called for evidence that Trump Jr. reimbursed Kremlev.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tillis commented, “It’s just colossally bad judgment at best,” regarding Kremlev’s involvement, and advised Trump Jr. to be proactive in clarifying the situation.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Grassley did not comment on the implications of the situation, including whether he concurred with Curtis’s suggestion that the gift could be seen as corruption.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hunter Biden expressed his willingness to testify voluntarily, stating, “I say bring it on. I’ve already given more than seven hours of sworn testimony. More than three dozen witnesses testified across two chambers. I had no foreign business dealings while my father was president. None. I painted paintings, and I still do. I’ll sit next to Don Jr. and testify any time, any place. Eric and Jared can join us too. No need for a subpoena. Let’s all do it tomorrow.”</p>
