Trump praised Mamdani, stating, "I want him to be a great mayor, and he’s certainly got potential, got great potential," during a meeting at Gracie Mansion on Monday.</p><p>The meeting, which focused on cost of living and housing issues, has drawn criticism from some Republicans who are concerned about maintaining control of the House and Senate in the upcoming elections. A GOP strategist, speaking anonymously, described the situation as "self-inflicted" and "not helpful" for candidates in competitive races.</p><p>Another consultant expressed that Trump appears to be in a "self-indulgent period" and is not prioritizing winning. Less than two weeks prior, Trump had characterized the Democratic Party as undergoing a "communist" takeover during a speech at the GOP's midterm convention in Dallas.</p><p>Trump's meeting with Mamdani, who is the first socialist and first Muslim mayor of New York City, marks their third encounter since his election. A third GOP strategist noted that Trump's actions seem to contradict the party's messaging about the left being radical.</p><p>Some Trump supporters expressed discontent over the meeting. Laura Loomer, a right-wing activist, stated on social media that she felt demoralized by the encounter, calling Mamdani a "full blown communist jihadist" and expressing concern for Trump's base.</p><p>In response, Alex Bruesewitz, a Trump aide, defended the meeting on social media, arguing that it is healthy to have friendly relationships with those one disagrees with. Republicans are facing challenges in the midterms due to factors such as inflation and low approval ratings for Trump.</p><p>To counteract these challenges, the GOP aims to frame the election as a choice between candidates, portraying Democrats as far-left radicals. While some strategists believe Trump's meeting with Mamdani undermines this message, others, like veteran GOP consultant Dave Carney, downplayed its significance, stating it aligns with Trump's role as president.</p><p>Carney acknowledged the political landscape but indicated that the meeting does not have major implications.
